Nylon tea bags are popular for their convenience and appearance – you can clearly see the tea through the bag. However, they pose significant health risks, and it is wise to limit their use.
The glass transition temperature of nylon is below 100°C. This means that when brewing tea in hot water (just off the boil), molecules from the nylon can be released.
Research shows that a single nylon tea bag releases an average of 11.6 billion microplastics and 3.1 billion nanoplastics. These particles are so small that they can be absorbed by human intestinal cells, potentially posing health risks.
For a pure and healthy tea experience, it is best to choose loose tea and a tea infuser.
